Okay, so it looks like I'll be using the Mac as my primary laptop at least until this weekend. But I don't want to miss any more Greek lessons so I'll either do them here or go upstairs and use the XP desktop. My problem with the Mac is that whenever I save an rtf file using Text Edit and it has Greek in it, I can't read it on the Windows machine. Does anyone know of a wordprocessor that'll save Windows-compatible files? If it can handle MS-DOS text or plain text, which I dhink dos can read, that would be great too for my English files. Thanks.

Pages should be able to save in ms doc format, and both pages and text edit programs should do text files as well. MS office is available on both windows and mac as well as open office which is available on windows mac and linux if i am not mistaken. Don't know how accessible open office is but its free so doesn't hurt to download it and try it out.

I found a truly wonderful one called Bean. It can save to txt and rtf. The only thing I don't know yet is how Windows will handle the rtf when there's Greek in it. Anyway, here's a page full of free and open source software for the Mac. They've got this one along with one or two others as well as tons of other categories.

Btw, I didn't find open source all that accessible when it came to the wordprocessor. Yes, it can be used, but only with alot of patience.

use I Word, its basicly Mac's version of MS word. and it can save as word document, you won't have any problem opening using ms word. it can of course, safe as RTF format too. you can use I Word to open all the word formats documents, as well as rtf. and i believe its free, as it comes with mac OS

Bean's nice but when I write apostrophies they come out as single quotes and when I import files they do the same thing. So yeah. Gonna find something else.

Tiffany, here's the dl from a Mac user. Go to www.openoffice.org, and download it. It'll save in any format your lil heart desires. Also, you could try Pages, which is part of iWork. Microsoft Office is not accessible on the Mac at all. Stupid Microsoft!

I tried Open Office and didn't like the way in which it behaved. Whenever I use the left and right arrows to navigate letter by letter when at the beginning of a line, it repeats the whole line. It also repeats the whole line when I hit return. Finally, every single time I save an English document in text, it asks me if I'm sure I want to save in text. I don't get it either cause I never do anything fancy in my documents, just two lines and indent twice for a paragraph. Is there a way to change these things? To be honest, I'd just be happy with a regular text editor but you can't do Greek in txt so I need a wordprocessor.

You should probably try going through the preferances pane in open office and see if you can change some of its default behaviors. otherwise try Pages, which is part of iWork and usually comes with new macs.
